We are proud to announce that Prof. Alois Jungbauer, Coordinator of the CAARE project, has been honored with the 2025 Alan S. Michaels Award for his pioneering research contributions in the field of bioprocess engineering. This distinguished recognition highlights his lifelong commitment to advancing the scientific understanding, development, and optimization of innovative bioprocesses for the efficient production and purification of biopharmaceuticals.
Prof. Jungbauer will deliver his award lecture, titled “Scaling of process chromatography from micrometer to meter and how to become sustainable,” in San Diego, where he will share insights from decades of groundbreaking research.
Holding a doctorate in food technology and biotechnology from BOKU University, Prof. Jungbauer is Professor Emeritus of Downstream Processing at the Institute of Bioprocess Science and Technology at BOKU, Adjunct Professor at the University of Adelaide, and an active scientist at the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib). His current research focuses on bioprocess engineering of proteins, viruses, and gene therapy vectors.
Over his career, Prof. Jungbauer has made an outstanding impact on the bioprocessing community. He has published more than 400 scientific papers, 17 patents, 12 book chapters, and a monograph titled “Protein Chromatography, Process Development and Scale Up.” His work has led to several industrial biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, and he has contributed extensively through advisory roles for numerous companies.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Prof. Jungbauer has played a leading role in European training and innovation initiatives, having coordinated the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) Continuous Downstream Processing (CODOBIO) and now coordinating our CAARE project. He also serves as Vice President of the European Society of Biochemical Engineering Science (ESBES).
The CAARE consortium warmly congratulates Prof. Jungbauer on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates his exceptional contributions to the field of biochemical and bioprocess engineering.
